FISHERIES OBSERVERS

06 June, 2008 - 2 YEAR FIXED TERM CONTRACT

Four home-based observers are required to undertake sampling aboard commercial fishing vessels, collect data and report on the catch in connection with the Scottish Government’s Conservation Credits Scheme.

Candidates will possess a fisheries qualification and knowledge of fishing practices and/or relevant work experience or training. Basic numeric and IT skills are essential, as is a full UK driving license. Seagoing and fisheries data collection experience would be advantageous.

It is essential that the successful candidates possess (or have the ability to qualify for) Basic Fishing Industry Sea Survival, Fire Fighting and First Aid Certificates, complete the Fisheries Research Services (FRS) Observer training programme, and pass an ENG1 Medical.

Organisational, problem solving, decision making and team working skills are essential, as are good communication skills.

The base salary is £15,000 per annum, plus sea-going allowance of £171 per full day spent at sea. 125 days at sea per annum is expected. Individual trips may be up to 10 days duration. Candidates will be subject to a probation period.
